How has the UK’s behaviour towards energy bills changed since the start of 2022?

As of March 2022, we conducted a survey asking the British public about how rising energy costs were affecting their behavior, particularly after the energy price cap surged by 54%. This increase became effective on April 1st, 2022. By mid-April, the average UK household was already facing an additional £693 annually on their energy bills. For those interested in the full results from earlier this year, you can check them out here. In summary, we found that 45% of UK households were considering switching to renewable energy sources like solar or wind power if their energy bills rose by 50% due to the price cap hike. Fast forward to recent months, predictions of a 30% increase in the October energy price cap turned out to be far off the mark—instead, it skyrocketed by 80%. For the average household, this meant an annual payment of £3,549. The government responded by introducing the 'Energy Price Guarantee,' initially capping household energy bills at £2,500 for two years. However, the policy underwent a quick U-turn, now only valid until April 2023. Naturally, this has left many Britons confused about their energy expenses. Given these developments, we decided to revisit UK residents to gauge how much their electricity bills have actually risen since the initial price cap announcement in March 2022. Additionally, we sought insights into how people feel about the various schemes aimed at controlling their energy costs. Our latest poll revealed some interesting trends. 60.3% of respondents reported a 50% increase in their electricity bills, while 16.9% faced hikes between 50-100%. Shockingly, 4.1% of UK residents experienced bill increases of over 100%. These numbers remained consistent across different regions, impacting both urban and rural areas equally. For instance, 73% of Plymouth residents saw their bills go up by up to 50%, similar to 65% of Liverpool residents and 58% in Glasgow. With all the fluctuations in policies and guarantees, we posed a series of questions to the public regarding their understanding and perceptions of current energy schemes: - **I do not have a good understanding of how much bills should cost:** 34.8% agreed, whereas 39% disagreed. - **I do not currently know what my utilities are set to increase by:** 40% agreed versus 34.9% who disagreed. - **I avoid checking my utility bills:** 21.4% agreed compared to 57.1% who disagreed. - **I find energy bills confusing:** 41% agreed, while 32% disagreed. - **I would change energy provider if I had a better understanding of how:** 35.6% agreed versus 26% who disagreed. Clearly, a significant portion of UK residents are grappling with uncertainty surrounding their energy bills.
