2-Alarm fire in Waukegan, 12-25-20

From the Waukegan Fire Department's Facebook page:

On this chilly Christmas morning, Waukegan firefighters, along with crews from several neighboring departments, are working hard to put out a persistent fire. If you're out and about this morning, please avoid the area around S. Genesee and Washington Streets.

The fire at 18 S. Genesee has now been fully extinguished. The building was in the process of being demolished as part of the city’s initiative to remove problematic vacant structures. Thanks to the efforts of over ten fire departments, approximately 50 firefighters, and support from Webb Excavating, the fire was brought under control by 10 a.m. Despite the extremely cold and icy conditions, there were no injuries reported. A special thanks goes to Mayor Cunningham for stopping by to personally thank everyone for their hard work on this tough Christmas day.

As the sun rose over Waukegan, the community watched with admiration as first responders worked tirelessly through the freezing temperatures. It's moments like these that remind us of the dedication and courage of our local heroes. While the fire is now out, the impact of their efforts will be felt for a long time. If you're passing by the area, take a moment to appreciate the work done by these brave individuals who put their safety on the line for the greater good.
