What’s That Sound?

Thumping – This noise could be a flat tire if it happens at both low and high speeds. If the sound is coming from under the hood, it might be a loose belt or a failing pulley.

Buzzing – A buzzing sound often points to a faulty exhaust manifold gasket. This issue should be addressed quickly, as it can lead to carbon monoxide leaks and further engine damage.

Ticking – Ticking noises can be caused by a worn U-joint, or by low or dirty oil leading to dry tappets. It’s a sign that your vehicle needs maintenance sooner rather than later.

Squeaking from the Wheels – This is often a sign that your brake pads are worn out. It could also indicate a problem with the universal joint, drive shaft, or rear differential.

Hissing – A hissing sound under the hood usually means there's a leak in a hose, line, or fitting. This may also trigger the check engine light, so it's best to get it checked right away.

Clunking – A clunking noise could signal a worn ball joint. Avoid rough roads until you have it fixed. If the sound happens when braking, it may be due to worn steering parts, a faulty caliper, or damaged hardware.

Grumbling – A deep, rumbling sound might suggest a failing water pump bearing. This can lead to coolant leaks and overheating if not repaired.

Knocking – Engine knocking is often a sign of worn crankshaft bearings, issues with connecting rods, or a loose bolt. It's a serious issue that should be inspected immediately.

Thud – A thudding sound could come from a loose pulley or an exhaust pipe. Depending on where it's coming from, it may point to different mechanical problems.

Rumbling – If you hear a constant rumble, it could be worn wheel bearings. If the sound is underneath the car, it might be a hole in the exhaust system or a loose pipe.

Whining – A whining noise usually indicates transmission trouble. If it sounds more like grinding, it could mean a worn clutch or internal damage in the transmission system.
