China Shipbuilding Heavy Industry International Trading Co., Ltd. and Barge Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. have recently signed a significant contract in Beijing for the construction of two 320,000 DWT Very Large Crude Oil Carriers (VLCCs). These vessels are jointly developed by the United Seller and Global Shipping Co., Ltd., with Barge Heavy Industries playing a key role in the design and development. This new ship type, featuring independent intellectual property rights, is currently recognized as the largest VLCC in the world. The successful signing of this agreement marks a major milestone in Barge Heavy Industries' efforts to expand its product line into high-tech, large-scale maritime solutions.
Global Shipping Company, established in 1955 in Hong Kong by the late Sir Jay, has partnered with Barge Heavy Industries on this project. The contracted VLCCs will measure 332.77 meters in length, 60 meters in width, with a design draft of 21 meters and a speed of 16.1 knots. These ships are capable of carrying over 2.1 million barrels of oil and are designed to meet the latest international standards, including the Tanker Structure (JTP) specifications and requirements from leading global oil companies. Their advanced design highlights Barge Heavy Industries’ growing capabilities in creating ultra-large, high-value ships.
Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., responsible for constructing these vessels, is one of China’s most advanced shipbuilding bases. The company has previously developed environmentally friendly bulk carriers with independent intellectual property rights, including a 174,000-ton model. In December 2005, Barge Heavy Industries secured contracts with Canadian firm TeeKay for 2+2 1.5-million-ton crude oil carriers, and with Nanjing Changjiang Oil Transportation Company for 2+2 297,000-ton VLCCs and 4+6+2 46,000-ton ships. These projects, totaling 1.4 million tons and worth 7 billion yuan, have drawn widespread attention from both domestic and international shipbuilding and shipping communities.
With the current shipbuilding schedule set for 2010, Barge Heavy Industries continues to solidify its position as a leader in the global shipbuilding industry, focusing on innovation, efficiency, and meeting the evolving needs of the maritime sector.
