China Shipbuilding Heavy Industry International Trading Co., Ltd. and Barge Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. have recently signed a major contract in Beijing for the construction of two 320,000 DWT Very Large Crude Oil Carriers (VLCCs). These vessels were jointly developed by the United Seller and Global Shipping Co., Ltd., with Barge Heavy Industries playing a key role in their independent design and development. This new ship model represents the largest VLCC currently in operation worldwide, showcasing the company’s growing capabilities in high-tech, large-scale shipbuilding.
Global Shipping Company, established in 1955 in Hong Kong by the late Sir Jay, has partnered with Barge Heavy Industries to deliver this advanced vessel. The contracted VLCC measures 332.77 meters in length, 60 meters in width, and features a design draft of 21 meters, allowing it to travel at a speed of 16.1 knots. It is capable of carrying over 2.1 million barrels of oil, making it one of the fastest and most efficient VLCCs in service today. The ship was specifically designed to meet the needs of the shipowner, adhering to the latest international standards, including the Tanker Structure (JTP) specifications and requirements from leading global oil companies.
Barge Heavy Industries has demonstrated its strong engineering and design capabilities through this project. The company, which also operates Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., has a proven track record in building large-scale, environmentally friendly ships. Notably, it has developed 174,000-ton bulk carriers with independent intellectual property rights. In 2005, Barge Heavy Industries secured a significant contract with Canada’s TeeKay Company for the construction of 2+2 1.5-million-ton crude oil tankers, as well as 2+2 297,000-ton VLCCs and other vessels for Nanjing Changjiang Oil Transportation Company.
These contracts, totaling 1.4 million tons and valued at 7 billion yuan, have drawn widespread attention from the shipping and media industries globally. With a clear schedule set for 2010, Barge Heavy Industries is continuing to solidify its position as a leader in the global shipbuilding sector, focusing on innovation, efficiency, and meeting the evolving demands of the maritime industry.
