At the 2007 National Science and Technology Awards Conference held on the 8th, nearly 40 petrochemical projects were honored with the National Science and Technology Award. Among them, Professor Ren Enze, a globally renowned catalyst expert in the petrochemical field, received the top national science and technology award of the year. In recent years, China's petrochemical industry has increasingly recognized the importance of independent innovation and has made meaningful efforts in this area. According to statistics, from 2001 to 2007, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association recommended a total of 97 projects for the National Science and Technology Awards, of which 41 won after review. These included three first prizes for scientific and technological advancement and one second prize for scientific and technological progress, along with 11 second prizes in the National Technology Invention Award. The average winning rate over seven years was 42.2%, with a peak of 53.8% in certain years—significantly higher than the national average of 30%.
The National Science and Technology Progress Award is a key national honor that recognizes innovations in key technologies, system integration, and the introduction, digestion, and re-innovation of foreign technologies. It encourages collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions. One of the most notable projects awarded in 2007 was Yantai Wanhua Polyurethane Co., Ltd.'s 200,000-ton-per-year large-scale MDI production technology and industrialization project, which won the first prize for scientific and technological progress. As the world's largest manufacturer of MDI equipment, Yantai Wanhua has broken a 40-year technical monopoly and achieved international standards in both overall technology and products, with some high-end products even surpassing foreign counterparts.
This major innovation, mainly driven by enterprises, reflects the current level of innovation within the petrochemical industry. It also shows that companies are becoming the main force behind technological innovation, investment, and application. Over the years, petrochemical projects have consistently occupied a significant portion of the National Science and Technology Awards.
