Dow Chemical Plastics' strategic transformation

After over three months of networking, short message polling, and expert evaluation, HC Network, the China Plastics Machinery Industry Association, and the China Engineering Plastics Industry Association jointly organized the "China Plastics Industry Development Forum" and the HC Network 2007 Annual Plastics Industry Top Ten Awards. The "Good Presentation Ceremony" honored the top ten companies in the domestic plastics industry, provided a platform for business discussions, and aimed to promote the sustainable development of China’s plastics sector. Among the competitors, the Dow Chemical Plastics Business Unit, a global multinational with a strong brand presence, won the "Top Ten Suppliers in the Plastics Industry in 2007" with the highest number of votes. In an exclusive interview, Paul Wu, Sales Director of the Dow Plastics Products Division in Greater China, shared his vision of “solution, preferred Dow.” Q: First of all, I would like to extend my congratulations to Dow Chemical on winning the “Top Ten Suppliers of the Plastic Industry in 2007.” What are your thoughts on this recognition? Also, could you say a few words to the support from your customers? Wu: We sincerely thank our customers and industry leaders for their continued support, as well as the organizers for creating such a valuable platform that helps us increase our visibility among peers and users in China. While Dow has long enjoyed high brand recognition abroad, we are now focusing more on strengthening our brand presence in China. We plan to enhance our marketing efforts significantly in the coming years. Q: As a globally renowned company, can you briefly share how Dow Chemical has developed in China since its entry? Wu: Dow first entered China through trade, serving a wide range of local customers. Over the years, both our employee base and customer numbers have grown substantially. We have also established production facilities in cities like Zhangjiagang, Ningbo, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Additionally, we announced plans to invest heavily in new projects in China. In 2008, we will open a state-of-the-art R&D center in Zhangjiang, Shanghai, further demonstrating our commitment to the Asia-Pacific market and Chinese customers. Q: In recent years, Dow has emphasized the “human element” brand concept. Could you explain what this means and how Dow implements it? Wu: “Human Element” is a way for us to clearly communicate what we do every day in simple terms. Our products serve various industries, including automotive, electronics, construction, and more. For example, in the automotive sector, our materials help reduce noise pollution. In household appliances, they contribute to energy efficiency by reducing material thickness. Ultimately, our work is centered around improving people's lives through chemistry. Q: Many people may not be fully aware of the history of the Dow Chemical Plastics Division. Can you share some background? Wu: The Dow Plastics Division offers a diverse portfolio of products, ranging from everyday items to specialty plastics. This includes polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and advanced materials like engineering thermoplastics and synthetic rubber. These products are used in a wide array of applications—from adhesives and packaging to medical devices and construction materials. Q: With intense competition in the plastics industry, how does Dow stand out as an innovative solution provider? What ensures the realization of the “solution, preferred Dow” ideal? Wu: As competition intensifies, the demand for innovative solutions grows. Dow continuously adapts its product offerings to meet these needs. At events like the China International Plastics Show, we showcase our latest innovations and strengthen relationships with customers across Asia. We also focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility, which enhances our reputation and long-term competitiveness. Q: With oil prices surpassing $100 per barrel, many plastics companies face rising costs. How is Dow managing this challenge? Wu: This challenge affects the entire supply chain. To cope, we are being more cautious with cost management and working closely with customers to navigate price fluctuations. Additionally, our joint venture with Kuwait Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (PIC) provides a solid foundation for long-term cost stability, offering access to raw materials, advanced technologies, and a global supply chain. Q: At the 2008 China National Rubber and Plastics Exhibition, what products did Dow present? Wu: We focused on showcasing our transition from a product-centric to a solution-oriented approach. This includes new styrene-butadiene copolymers that offer better performance and cost advantages compared to traditional materials. These products are designed to meet evolving customer needs, especially in sectors like consumer electronics and home appliances.
