Changan has developed a new generation of H-series engines

On June 2, Changan's independently developed H-series engines successfully ignited at the Chongqing plant, marking a major milestone in the company’s journey toward international technological leadership. This achievement demonstrates that Changan's engine technology has now reached world-class standards, reinforcing its position as a key player in the global automotive industry. The H-series is a 1.1- to 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder, 16-valve, all-aluminum engine developed through Changan’s own R&D efforts, incorporating advanced international technologies. It boasts full intellectual property rights and will be installed in the company’s core models. Expected to go into mass production in 2010, these engines are designed to compete effectively in the automotive market from 2010 to 2025. According to Changan engineers, the H-series offers significant advantages, including high power output, strong torque, low emissions, and excellent fuel efficiency. One of the key features of the H-series is the use of intake and exhaust CVVT (Variable Valve Timing) technology. This enhances smooth power delivery while also improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. Additionally, the engine integrates WG-TC (exhaust turbocharger with bypass valve) and GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) technologies. The use of aluminum alloys for the cylinder block, cylinder head, rocker arms, and pistons improves heat dissipation and reduces weight, further contributing to lower fuel consumption. For the first time, the H-series employs a plastic (variable) intake manifold, which minimizes intake resistance and boosts combustion efficiency across both low and high RPM ranges. This design supports better low-speed torque and high-speed power, resulting in improved acceleration and dynamic performance. The use of stainless steel and a tightly coupled structure between the manifold and three-way catalyst also helps reduce exhaust backpressure and speeds up catalyst light-off, enhancing overall engine performance. Another notable feature is the electronic throttle system, which replaces traditional cable throttles. This allows for precise control of throttle opening via the ECU, ensuring optimal air-fuel mixture and complete combustion. As a result, the engine meets the highest international emission standards, including carbon emission benchmarks. Finally, the core components of the H-series engine, particularly the cylinder block, are built using a high-strength structural design and precision die casting. Unique features such as the water-jacket nose bridge and bottom structure enhance heat transfer, while the full-support main bearing block and integral stiffener improve reliability and NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance. The hydraulic suspension system is designed with wide-frequency vibration reduction, making it suitable for various road conditions and offering superior comfort and quietness. Overall, the H-series represents a major leap forward for Changan in engine technology, combining innovation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. It not only strengthens the company’s competitive edge but also sets a new benchmark for domestic automakers in the global market.
