Changan has developed a new generation of H-series engines
On June 2, Changan's independently developed H-series engines successfully ignited at the Chongqing facility, marking a major milestone in the company's technological advancement. This achievement confirms that Changan's engine technology has now reached international standards, showcasing its growing capabilities in automotive engineering.
The H-series is a 1.1-1.6L inline four-cylinder, 16-valve, all-aluminum engine developed through Changan’s own research and development efforts. It integrates advanced global technologies and is equipped with full intellectual property rights. These engines will be installed in key models of Changan’s own-brand vehicles, starting production in 2010. They are expected to compete effectively in the automotive market from 2010 to 2025.
According to Changan’s R&D team, the H-series engines offer significant advantages, including high power output, strong torque, low emissions, and improved fuel efficiency. The design focuses on performance, environmental responsibility, and cost-effectiveness, making it a strong contender in the competitive car market.
One of the standout features of the H-series is the use of dual CVVT (Continuous Variable Valve Timing) for both intake and exhaust systems. This enhances power delivery smoothness while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Additionally, the engine incorporates WG-TC (exhaust turbocharger with bypass valve) and GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) technologies, further improving efficiency and performance.
The cylinder block, head, rocker arms, and pistons are made from aluminum alloy, which improves heat dissipation and reduces overall weight, contributing to better fuel economy. The use of lightweight materials also helps in achieving a more responsive and dynamic driving experience.
For the first time, the H-series features a plastic variable intake manifold, which minimizes intake resistance and enhances combustion efficiency across both low and high RPM ranges. This ensures better low-speed torque and high-speed power, leading to improved acceleration and handling. The engine also uses a stainless steel manifold combined with a tightly coupled three-way catalyst, which reduces exhaust backpressure and speeds up catalytic light-off, further boosting performance and emissions control.
Another key innovation is the electronic throttle system, which replaces the traditional cable throttle. This allows for precise control of the throttle opening via an electronic control unit, ensuring optimal air-fuel mixture and complete combustion. As a result, the engine meets the highest international emission standards, including carbon emission benchmarks.
Finally, the core components of the H-series engine, such as the cylinder block, are designed with high strength and precision die-casting techniques. Unique features like the water-jacket nose bridge and bottom structure enhance heat transfer, while the full-support main bearing block and integral stiffener improve reliability and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) performance. The hydraulic suspension system features a wide-frequency vibration reduction design, making it suitable for various road conditions and ensuring a comfortable and quiet ride.
Overall, the H-series represents a significant leap forward for Changan, demonstrating its commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainability in the global automotive industry.
