Breaking the monopoly of international technology to produce AMT automatic transmission
On April 9, Chongqing Qingshan Industry Co., Ltd. made history by producing China's first domestically developed AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) with full intellectual property rights. This groundbreaking technology was first integrated into the JAC Tongyue sedan, marking a major milestone in China's automotive industry. For years, core AMT technology had been dominated by foreign manufacturers, but this development has changed the landscape, significantly lowering the cost of AMT transmissions by nearly two-thirds.
In 2007, over 72% of automatic transmissions used in China were imported. Domestic production was largely controlled by joint ventures such as Shanghai GM, Shanghai ZF, and Tianjin Aisin, which limited options for independent automakers. As a result, many Chinese car models faced challenges in finding suitable partners or suffered from high pricing. Chongqing Qingshan’s breakthrough in developing and mass-producing AMT systems with independent technology has not only cut costs but also provided a much-needed boost to domestic automakers.
AMT transmission is based on manual gearboxes but features an automated control system, offering high efficiency, reliability, fuel economy, and low maintenance and production costs. It is particularly well-suited for entry-level vehicles, aligning with China's current market needs. The AMT produced by Chongqing Qingshan has reached performance levels comparable to those of the Citroën C1, demonstrating its competitive edge.
According to Anjin, chairman of the JAC Group, the Tongyue model equipped with AMT has already started trial sales. It is expected that AMT-equipped versions will make up around 20% to 30% of the total sales. Additionally, a B-Class sedan set to debut at the Shanghai Auto Show will also feature this advanced transmission. According to Dong Qihong, CEO of Qingshan Company, several major automakers, including Changan, Shanghai GM Wuling, and Haima Motors, are currently in discussions about integrating AMT into their models. Lifan Motors has also shown interest in recent days.
To support future growth, Castle Peak has established three key platforms: the AF514 platform for 1.3-1.6L vehicles, the AF510 platform for 1.0L and smaller cars, and the AR514 platform designed for mid-to-high-end minicars, SUVs, and MPVs. These platforms reflect the company’s commitment to expanding its technological footprint across various vehicle segments.
This innovation not only strengthens China's position in the global automotive industry but also paves the way for more affordable, efficient, and reliable vehicles for consumers nationwide.
