Breaking the monopoly of international technology to produce AMT automatic transmission
On April 9, Chongqing Qingshan Industry Co., Ltd. made history by producing China's first AMT automatic transmission with full independent intellectual property rights. This groundbreaking technology was first installed on the JAC Tongyue sedan, marking a significant milestone in China’s automotive industry. For years, core AMT technology had been dominated by foreign manufacturers, but this development has changed the landscape, reducing the cost of AMT transmissions by nearly two-thirds.
In 2007, over 72% of automatic transmissions used in China were imported. Domestic production was largely controlled by joint ventures such as Shanghai GM, Shanghai ZF, and Tianjin Aisin, which limited the options for independent automakers. As a result, many Chinese brands faced challenges in finding reliable partners or were forced to pay premium prices for automatic transmissions. Qingshan Industry broke through this barrier by developing its own AMT technology and achieving mass production, significantly lowering costs for domestic carmakers.
AMT transmissions offer high efficiency, reliability, fuel savings, and low maintenance costs, making them ideal for entry-level vehicles. This aligns well with China’s current market needs. The AMT produced by Qingshan has reached performance levels comparable to the Citroën C1, proving that domestic innovation can match international standards.
According to Anjin, president of JAC Group, the Tongyue model equipped with AMT has already entered trial sales. It is expected that around 20% to 30% of Tongyue’s total sales will come from models with this advanced transmission. Additionally, a B-class sedan set to debut at the Shanghai Auto Show will also feature AMT technology. Qingshan is in discussions with major automakers, including Changan, Shanghai GM Wuling, Haima Motors, and even Lifan Motors, which has shown strong interest in the project.
Castle Peak has developed three key platforms tailored for different vehicle segments: the AF514 platform for 1.3–1.6L cars, the AF510 platform for 1.0L and smaller engines, and the AR514 platform designed for mid-to-high-end minicars, SUVs, and MPVs. These platforms highlight the company’s commitment to expanding its reach across the automotive spectrum.
This advancement not only boosts domestic manufacturing capabilities but also paves the way for more affordable and efficient vehicles, supporting the growth of China’s auto industry.
