Hoarder house in Glencoe causes Haz Mat response, 5/15/15
The Glencoe Public Safety Department activated a Haz Mat Box Alarm on Friday, May 15, 2015, after authorities found a residence with 39 dogs covered in feces and matted fur. The incident sparked a major response from local emergency services and animal welfare organizations.
According to reports from ChicagoTribune.com, nearly 40 dogs were discovered at a home in Glencoe, many of whom had been living in unsanitary conditions. Five of the animals were later euthanized due to severe health issues or aggression. Firefighters in hazmat suits removed up to 39 dogs from the property on Greenwood Avenue. A neighbor reported that crews worked for nine hours on Thursday and four more on Friday.
The home was initially visited by police for a wellness check on Wednesday, when 35 dogs were found—far exceeding the city's limit for pets in a single household. While the previous owner, a 65-year-old woman, had recently sold the house, she was not charged with any crimes related to the incident. A tree had fallen on the property, but the former owner was still living there at the time.
The dogs, aged between 2 and 5 years old, were in extremely poor condition. Their eyes and ears were completely hidden under layers of feces and dirt, and many suffered from infections that caused the loss of their ear tips and tails. They appeared to have been fed, but their overall health was severely compromised. Many were scared and unaccustomed to human interaction, moving awkwardly as if they had never walked on a floor.
Cleaning the animals took about two hours per dog, with most being sedated first. On Saturday, staff at two north suburban animal hospitals worked tirelessly to clean and care for the dogs. One dog, already cleaned, remained cowering in its crate, while another emitted a strong, unpleasant odor.
Kelly Moyer, founder of Tails of Hope, said the organization expects to take in more dogs once they are fully cleaned and vaccinated. Her team plans to socialize the animals, place them in foster homes, and eventually find them permanent adoptive families. The case has raised concerns about animal welfare and the need for stricter enforcement of pet ownership laws in residential areas.
