Hoarder house in Glencoe causes Haz Mat response, 5/15/15

On Friday, May 15, 2015, the Glencoe Public Safety Department activated a Haz Mat Box Alarm after officials discovered a home with 39 dogs covered in feces and matted fur. The incident sparked an emergency response, with firefighters in hazmat suits working for over 13 hours to rescue the animals from the property on Greenwood Avenue. According to reports from ChicagoTribune.com, nearly 40 dogs were found in deplorable conditions, with five of them ultimately being euthanized due to severe illness or aggression. The animals were taken to two local animal hospitals for treatment, where they underwent extensive cleaning and medical care. Each dog required about two hours of attention, including shaving, trimming nails, and addressing infections that had developed from neglect. Neighbors described the scene as shocking. A woman in her 60s had lived in the house for years, and while dogs could be heard barking, it was not immediately clear how many were inside. The home had recently been sold, and the previous owner, who is 65 years old, has not faced any criminal charges related to the incident. A tree had fallen on the house, but the owner was still living there at the time of the discovery. The dogs, ranging from 2 to 5 years old, were so filthy that their eyes and ears were barely visible until they were cleaned. Despite appearing to have been fed, many suffered from serious health issues, including loss of ear tips and tails. They were terrified and unaccustomed to human interaction, moving awkwardly as if they had never walked on a floor before. One of the dogs had a terrible odor, and staff at the animal hospital worked tirelessly to clean and care for them. Kelly Moyer, founder of Tails of Hope, said the organization expects to take in more dogs once they are fully cleaned and vaccinated. Her team plans to provide rehabilitation, foster care, and eventually find them permanent homes. The incident has raised awareness about animal welfare and the importance of regular inspections for pet owners.
