Box Alarm fire in Sycamore, 9-5-20

This report comes from Art Zern:

Sycamore Fire Department was called to a General Alarm early Saturday night, September 5th, 2020, just before midnight. A two-story duplex was engulfed in flames on the C and D sides, with fire spreading to both floors and the attic. Engine 1 and Chief 3 arrived first and found heavy fire originating from the deck, which had spread through the vinyl siding. They deployed a 2 ½-inch line at the C/D corner to knock down the main fire. Engine 2 then arrived to assist with water supply and extended a second line to the second floor for full extinguishment and to pull walls and ceilings for better access.

All residents had safely evacuated before firefighters arrived. Due to the lack of available General Alarm companies, Chief 3 (C-3) took charge and contained the fire effectively. The efforts of E-1 and E-2 were commendable. DeKalb T-1 handled roof operations, while other units conducted extensive overhaul, checked the adjacent unit for any signs of extension, and performed RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) duties. Special thanks go out to our mutual aid partners for their quick response and support.

Another structure fire in just 8 days—this time, the Gold Shift crews made a solid stop!

This is the official press release from the fire that occurred early Sunday morning:

On Saturday, September 5, 2020, around 11:58 PM, the Sycamore Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 660 Hill Street. Upon arrival, the initial responding units discovered heavy fire coming from the rear deck area of a residential building, extending vertically into the attic. Crews initially attacked the fire from the exterior using a large 2 ½-inch handline. Once the fire was under control, they moved inside with 1 ¾-inch lines and began a primary search for occupants.

The crews quickly knocked down the fire and had it under control within 30 minutes. They remained on the scene for an additional hour and a half to perform overhaul and check for any signs of fire extension.

The Sycamore Fire Department received assistance from several neighboring departments, including DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston, Elburn, Malta, Kirkland, Somonauk, Maple Park, and Burlington. Additional support came from the Sycamore Police Department, ComEd, and NICOR.

No one was injured, and all residents were safely evacuated. The roof suffered severe damage from heat and flames, while the second floor was heavily damaged by heat, smoke, and water. The first floor and basement also sustained significant smoke and water damage. The estimated loss from the fire is around $150,000. The building is now uninhabitable, and all residents have been relocated.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined as the investigation is ongoing.
