Here's a report from Art Zern: Sycamore Fire Department was called to a General Alarm for a structure fire just before midnight on Saturday, September 5, 2020. Engine 1 and Chief 3 arrived at the scene to find a two-story duplex engulfed in heavy flames on the C and D sides, with the fire spreading to both floors and the attic. The fire had started on the rear deck and spread through the vinyl siding. E-1 quickly deployed a 2 ½-inch line to the C/D corner, effectively knocking down the majority of the fire. E-2 soon arrived to assist with water supply and extended a second line to the second floor for complete suppression and to pull walls and ceilings for inspection. All residents had safely evacuated before emergency crews arrived. Due to the lack of available General Alarm units, C-3 took control of the fire scene. The efforts of E-1 and E-2 were commendable, and DeKalb T-1 managed the roof operations. Other responding units conducted extensive overhaul, checked the adjacent unit for any signs of extension, and performed RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) duties. A special thank you to all our mutual aid partners who supported the response. Here is the official press release from the fire that occurred early Sunday morning: On Saturday, September 5, 2020, around 11:58 PM, the Sycamore Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 660 Hill Street. Upon arrival, the first arriving units found heavy fire coming from the rear deck area of a residential home, which had spread vertically into the attic. Crews initially attacked the fire from the exterior using a large 2 ½-inch handline. Once the fire was knocked down, they transitioned to an aggressive interior attack with 1 ¾-inch lines and began a primary search for any occupants still inside. The crews quickly brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes. They remained on scene for an additional hour and a half to perform overhaul and check for any signs of fire extension. The Sycamore Fire Department received assistance from the DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston, Elburn, Malta, Kirkland, Somonauk, Maple Park, and Burlington Fire Departments. Additional support came from the Sycamore Police Department, ComEd, and NICOR. No one was injured among the residents or the firefighters. The roof structure suffered severe damage from the heat and flames. The second floor was heavily damaged due to heat, smoke, and water. The first floor and basement also sustained smoke and water damage. The estimated loss from the fire is approximately $150,000. The building is not habitable, and all residents have been relocated. The cause of the fire remains undetermined while the investigation continues.
