Excerpts from DailyHerald.com: The Pingree Grove and Countryside Fire Protection District is set to put a referendum on the ballot on April 4, seeking voter approval to borrow $8.5 million for the construction of two new fire stations. Fire Chief Mitch Crocetti explained that the initiative aims to improve geographic coverage and reduce emergency response times as the population in the area continues to grow. The district currently operates three fire stations, with Station 4 on Plank Road scheduled for closure and sale if the new stations are built. This move is part of a broader effort to optimize resources and better serve the community. To repay the loan, the district plans to use $2 million from its general fund and raise an additional $6.5 million through a 20-year property tax increase. For a home valued at $300,000, this would equate to roughly $117 per year. The 50-square-mile district serves approximately 15,000 residents across Pingree Grove, the northern part of Campton Hills, and surrounding unincorporated areas. Over the past few years, the region has seen steady growth, with about 300 new housing units added annually. The proposed new stations will be located near Plato and Rippburger roads, and on Highland Avenue just east of Coombs Road. These locations were selected based on population density and the need for more efficient emergency service coverage. "Currently, reaching the far southwest part of our district, south of Burlington Road toward McDonald Road, takes around 11 or 12 minutes on a good day," Crocetti said. "With the new stations, we aim for an average response time of six minutes — the standard for EMS." This will be the first bond issue in the district's history. Despite being a relatively small department, with 54 firefighters responding to 1,090 calls last year, the district has maintained a strong financial position. It saved up for nine years before paying cash for the 2015 station, which replaced Station 1 — sold to Anchor Spa & Pool Inc. for about $160,000. If approved, the new property tax increase will appear on tax bills starting in June 2018. Crocetti noted that the district’s assessed property values have been rising steadily over the past few years, and if this trend continues, the actual tax burden could be lower than the projected $117 per year.
