2024 State of Design & Make Report from Autodesk Finds Growing Confidence in Resilience, Optimism Toward AI
SAN FRANCISCO, April 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — A groundbreaking survey of nearly 5,400 global business leaders, futurists, and experts in the design and make industries has revealed a surge in confidence and optimism about the future. The 2024 State of Design & Make report, released today by Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), highlights how industry leaders are embracing digital transformation, AI, and sustainability as key drivers for growth and resilience.
The report shows that professionals across architecture, engineering, construction, design, manufacturing, and media and entertainment are more confident than ever in their companies’ ability to navigate challenges. With over 73% of respondents feeling prepared for economic or geopolitical shifts—up 14 points from last year—the trend toward digitization is reaching a tipping point. Companies that have invested in digital tools are seeing greater success, and this momentum is expected to continue.
One of the most notable findings is the growing trust in AI. More than 76% of professionals believe AI is a valuable tool for their industry, with many using it to boost productivity, streamline operations, and achieve sustainability goals. While AI adoption is high, leaders agree that we're only scratching the surface of its potential. Many predict that generative AI will play a major role in shaping future design decisions, from physical products to digital assets.
Sustainability is also emerging as a top priority. Nearly all companies (97%) have taken steps to improve their environmental impact, with 87% viewing sustainable practices as a long-term business strategy. In fact, 69% now see sustainability as beneficial for short-term success—a significant jump from the previous year. Leaders emphasize that without meaningful commitments, businesses risk falling behind competitors who align with evolving customer and employee values.
Upskilling is another critical focus. With talent shortages becoming a major challenge, companies are investing in training programs to bridge the gap. The top skills in demand include AI implementation, digital design, and software development. However, despite the recognition of these skills' importance, only 38% of companies have the resources to develop effective internal training initiatives.
Autodesk’s report underscores the transformative power of technology in reshaping industries. As the world faces unprecedented challenges, leaders are turning to innovation to drive efficiency, creativity, and responsible growth. “As the world confronts new challenges, technology is our most powerful tool for designing and making a better world for all,†said Andrew Anagnost, President and CEO of Autodesk.
