At the 17th International Refrigeration Exhibition in Shanghai, Arkema, the world’s second-largest fluorochemical producer, revealed a significant expansion plan for its Forane 22 facility in Changshu, China. The plant's annual production capacity will increase by 50%, from 20,000 to 30,000 tons, to meet the rising demand for eco-friendly refrigerants and fluorine-based polymer products in the Chinese market. The upgraded facility is expected to start operations this year.
Forane 22, an HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon), is a second-generation refrigerant that played a key role in replacing Freon in China starting in 2007. It is widely used in air conditioning and commercial refrigeration systems, as well as in the production of materials like polytetrafluoroethylene. The Changshu plant, which began operations in 2000, uses hydrofluoric acid integration technology. This expansion underscores Arkema’s commitment to strengthening its position in the Asian market.
Du Wang, General Manager of Arkema Fluorine Chemicals for the Pan-Pacific Region, emphasized that China is a critical global refrigerant market, with over 60% of the world’s air conditioners manufactured there. This has attracted numerous manufacturers to invest in the region. Arkema aims to become a top player in the Chinese market by maintaining a technologically advanced Forane 22 production base in Changshu and continuously expanding its product range.
Pierre Chanoine, President of Arkema’s Fluorochemical Products Group, highlighted that this investment reinforces Arkema’s leadership in developing next-generation HFCs and supports its customers in transitioning to more sustainable HFC technologies.
In addition, Arkema announced a $45 million investment to expand its production facility in Calvert City, Kentucky, USA, to manufacture HFC-32, a new-generation refrigerant. This move positions Arkema as the world’s largest producer of HFC-32, with plans to begin production in 2007.
