New model promotes shipbuilding technology advancement

On May 30th, the National Development and Reform Commission's "Tenth Five-Year" National Major Technical Equipment Development Special Project, titled "High-tech and Excellent Ship Key Technology Development," was officially accepted in Beijing. The project was jointly led by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), and the China Shipbuilding Engineering Society. The initiative spanned over two years and was sponsored by both CSSC and CSIC. The China Shipbuilding Engineering Society acted as the supervisory body, coordinating participation from 13 enterprises and institutions under the two major shipbuilding groups, as well as related organizations. The research focused on several key areas, including the development of advanced technologies for bulk carriers, optimization and replacement technologies for oil tankers, upgrades to container ship series, the design and construction of large film-type liquefied natural gas (LNG) ships, and the development of critical technologies for roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) passenger ships. A wealth of innovative results were achieved throughout the project, with detailed information available through the provided links. The total investment reached 320 million yuan. The project yielded significant patentable outcomes, including four types of bulk carriers such as 174,000-ton vessels, two types of oil tankers like Very Large Crude Oil Carriers (VLCCs), three types of container ships such as 8,000 TEU vessels, one type of 147,000 cubic meter film-type LNG ship, and one type of 16,000-ton ro-ro passenger ship. These technologies were applied across various ship types, and by the end of 2005, more than 200 vessels had adopted the project’s technological advancements. This contributed significantly to the efficient production and delivery of a large number of ships. These achievements greatly enhanced the technical capabilities and international competitiveness of China’s high-tech, high-value shipbuilding industry, particularly for bulk carriers, oil tankers, container ships, LNG vessels, and ro-ro ships. The project delivered substantial economic and social benefits. The successful implementation of this special project marked an important step taken by the Chinese government to support the growth of the shipbuilding sector. Through a management model supervised by CSSC, CSIC, and the China Shipbuilding Engineering Society, the integration of production, research, and education ensured that the project was completed efficiently and met all planned objectives.
