Hubei tries to establish a family expired drug recovery mechanism in the province
Hubei Province has introduced a new initiative aimed at improving drug safety and environmental protection by establishing a family-based drug recovery system. The provincial drug regulatory authority has designated a number of pharmacies across urban and rural areas as "authorized fixed-point units." These pharmacies will offer free replacements for expired medications, ensuring that residents can safely dispose of outdated drugs.
The program, launched in collaboration with Guangzhou Baiyunshan Hutchison Whampoa Chinese Medicine Co., Ltd., saw the first batch of seven qualified pharmacies in Jingzhou City officially recognized on the 23rd. These authorized units are not only able to replace all products from the company for free but also provide free replacements for similar brands within a specific timeframe. In cases where no suitable alternatives exist, expired drugs can be exchanged for daily necessities.
According to an official from the Hubei Provincial Food and Drug Administration, all recovered drugs will be disposed of in a harmless manner under strict supervision to prevent them from re-entering the market. The costs associated with recovery, destruction, and disposal are fully covered by Guangzhou Baiyunshan Hutchison Whampoa Traditional Chinese Medicine Co., Ltd. To expand the reach of this program, the distribution network will not only focus on city centers and residential areas but also extend to some rural townships.
A recent survey revealed that nearly 80% of households in China keep spare medications, with over 40% having expired drugs at home. Improper use of these expired medicines can lead to delayed treatment and even poisoning. Additionally, unscrupulous traders may resell these drugs, causing serious health risks. Improper disposal also contributes to environmental pollution. As a result, expired drugs have been classified as hazardous waste in the National Catalogue of Hazardous Wastes.
In response to these concerns, the Hubei Provincial Drug Supervisory Department included "cleaning up household medicine kits" as one of the "Ten Practical Matters" addressed in 2008, reflecting the government's commitment to public health and environmental safety. This initiative represents a proactive step toward better drug management and community well-being.
