Platts: World crude steel production declines for the fourth consecutive month

World Steel Association announced on Thursday that the world crude steel production in September was 112 million tons, which was the fourth consecutive month of decline, and the lowest level since February, but it was up 1% year-on-year. Cumulative production for the first nine months of 2010 was 1.045 billion tons, a year-on-year increase of 19.4%.
In China, the largest steel producer, output was 47.9 million tons in September, compared with 51.6 million tons in August because of government demand to cut production to reduce CO2 emissions. Last September, China produced 51 million tons. As a result of the decline in output, China’s share of global production fell from 46% in August to 43%.
In other Asian countries, Japan’s September production was 9.2 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 11.7%. South Korea's crude steel production increased by 3.2% to 4.65 million tons.
Crude steel production in the EU-27 countries was 14.3 million tons, an increase of 3.7% year-on-year and an increase of 17.7% from the previous quarter. The EU’s largest steel producer, Germany’s September production, was 3.3 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 4.1%. Spain's production fell by 1.2% to 1.4 million tons, while Italy's output increased by 19.8% from the same period last year to 2.3 million tons.
The US crude steel production was 6.6 million tons, an increase of 15% year-on-year, but it was down 3% from August.
In other major producing countries, Turkey’s production increased by 17.9% year-on-year to 2.5 million tons, Russian production increased by 3.3% to 5.6 million tons, and Ukrainian production decreased by 12.3% to 2.4 million tons. Crude steel production in Brazil was 2.7 million tons, which was a year-on-year decrease of 1.2% and a decrease of 7% from the previous month. Canada’s production was 1.2 million tons, an increase of 29% year-on-year and an increase of 21% from the previous month. Mexico's production rose 28% year-on-year to 1.4 million tons.
