Advantages of Autonomous Wet Process Phosphoric Acid

On November 22, Hubei Saning Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. used the wet chemical phosphoric acid refining technology of Huazhong Normal University to build an industrialized device with an annual output of 10,000 tons to achieve stable production for 7 consecutive months. The production cost of industrial grade phosphoric acid was far lower than that of thermal process phosphoric acid. The power-saving and yellow phosphorus tail gas emissions have a significant effect, and the production capacity is expected to reach more than 13,000 tons. At present, the company is designing a 100,000-tonnage plant for the year, and is striving for completion and production next year. The project broke the monopoly of foreign companies in the refining of wet-process phosphoric acid, laying a solid foundation for the comprehensive utilization of phosphate resources in China, energy-saving emission reduction and technological upgrading for phosphorus chemical companies, and deep processing and utilization of wet-process phosphoric acid.

Previously, only the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Israel and Russia had wet phosphoric acid refining technology. Phosphorus Chemical Engineering Center of Huazhong Normal University combined with the actual production of China's phosphorus chemical companies, in 1995 successfully developed the proprietary refining technology of wet process phosphoric acid. In 2009, Huashi Normal University and Saning Chemicals signed a technical cooperation agreement for the joint development of a 10,000-ton/year (industrial grade 85% wet refined phosphoric acid) industrialized plant. Sanning Chemical invested 60 million yuan, and the project started in April 2010 and was completed in April 2011. At present, the device produces 40 to 43 tons of products per day. The technical indicators all meet the national standards, and the product cost is about 4,100 yuan/ton. In August this year, the two sides signed a 100,000-ton/year cooperation agreement on wet refined phosphoric acid technology. The project has been approved and passed the environmental assessment and safety pre-evaluation. Currently, the design of the expansion is underway and it is planned to be completed and put into operation in 2012.

It is reported that the device uses medium and low-grade phosphate ore as raw materials and produces industrial-grade 85% phosphoric acid through a refining process such as leaching-concentration-pretreatment-extraction-post-treatment, and the quality of the product can be completely comparable to that of thermal phosphoric acid. After a little treatment of the refined phosphoric acid product, food grade and pharmaceutical grade phosphoric acid can be obtained, which can further increase the added value of the product. The wet refined phosphoric acid production has no “three wastes” pollution emissions, and its waste residue and tail fluid can all be recovered to produce fertilizer.

With an annual output of 10,000 tons of production equipment, the use of wet-process phosphoric acid to produce 1 ton of 85% industrial phosphoric acid, compared with the use of yellow phosphorus thermal method to save 4,000 kwh, to reduce yellow phosphorus exhaust emissions 1075 cubic meters, cost savings of 1150 yuan. If all the 2 million tons of phosphoric acid produced annually in the country are replaced with pyrophosphoric acid, then 8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity can be saved annually, which will reduce yellow phosphorus exhaust emissions by 2.15 billion cubic meters, cost savings of 2.3 billion yuan, and make full use of China and the United States.
