Toyota Sequoia Maintenance – Replace Brake Pads

Is it time to change the brake pads on your Toyota Sequoia? Here's how you can do it yourself.

Front Brakes

To replace the front brakes, follow these detailed steps:

1. Start by engaging the parking brake to secure the vehicle.
2. Remove the hub cap by locating the notch near the lug nuts and unscrew the lug nuts.
3. Lift the Sequoia with a jack and set up the jack stands. Remove the tire completely.

For the rear brake pads, first ensure the emergency brake is disengaged. Also, make sure the front wheels are securely blocked to prevent the car from rolling forward. Then proceed with these steps:

1. Locate the notch in the hub cap cover and remove it.
2. Loosen or remove the lug nuts.
3. Lift the vehicle using a jack and place jack stands underneath. Remove the wheel.
4. Find the caliper and remove the two bolts located at the back (17 mm bolts).
5. The caliper should now slide off easily. Be cautious while handling it—rest it on the axle using zip ties if necessary. Avoid twisting or damaging the brake line connected to the caliper.
6. Remove the brake pads either manually or with the assistance of a screwdriver.
7. Install the new brake pads, making sure they have the correct brake indicator tabs.
8. If needed, depress the piston using a screwdriver or a C-clamp with an old brake pad.
9. Reinstall the caliper and tighten the bolts securely.
10. Finally, put the tire back on and tighten the lug nuts firmly.
