From the Waukegan Fire Department's Facebook page: On this chilly Christmas morning, crews from the Waukegan Fire Department, along with support from multiple neighboring fire departments, are working to put out a stubborn fire. If you're out and about, please avoid the area around S. Genesee and Washington Streets. The fire at 18 S. Genesee was safely extinguished by 10 a.m. today. The building was in the process of being demolished as part of the city’s initiative to remove problematic vacant structures. Over ten fire departments and approximately 50 firefighters, along with assistance from Webb Excavating, worked together under extremely cold and icy conditions—no injuries were reported. A big thank you goes to Mayor Cunningham for stopping by to personally commend everyone for their hard work on this bitterly cold Christmas morning. This effort highlights the strong sense of community and cooperation that defines our emergency services. It's inspiring to see so many people come together to protect lives and property, even on a holiday. If you're passing by, you might spot some of the crews still cleaning up or checking the area for any remaining hot spots.
