Since the beginning of this year, the grade of imported cars has obviously increased

According to data released by the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services under the Ministry of Commerce, China imported 52,137 vehicles in the first five months of this year, with a total value reaching $1.471 billion. This represents a year-on-year increase of 28.32% in volume and 41.3% in value. The average import price per vehicle climbed to $28,220, indicating a noticeable shift toward higher-end models. Customs statistics further reveal that imports of cars with engine displacements between 1.0L and 1.5L dropped sharply, with only 319 units recorded—down 97.4% compared to the same period last year. In contrast, the import of 2.5L to 3.0L vehicles rose by 108.8%, while those above 3.0L saw an increase of 48.7%. The decline in four-wheel drive SUV imports can be attributed to rising global oil prices and the growing availability of domestic alternatives. From January to May, a total of 13,197 such vehicles were imported, marking a 35% drop in volume and a 16.2% decrease in value. Among off-road vehicles, those with displacements below 2.5L experienced the steepest decline, with both volume and value falling by approximately 80%. Meanwhile, larger engines above 3.0L saw a slight increase. Industry experts suggest that as more domestic car models enter the market and prices continue to fall, imported mid- and low-end vehicles are losing their competitive edge. Looking ahead, the import market is expected to see a trend toward higher-priced luxury and personalized vehicles, as demand shifts toward premium options. Source: Xinhua News Agency
