Since the beginning of this year, the grade of imported cars has obviously increased
According to data from the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services under the Ministry of Commerce, China imported 52,137 cars in the first five months of this year, with a total value of $1.471 billion. This represents a 28.32% year-on-year increase in volume and a significant 41.3% rise in value. The average import price per vehicle reached $28,220, indicating a noticeable shift toward higher-end models.
Customs statistics also reveal a sharp decline in the import of smaller cars. Specifically, the number of 1.0L to 1.5L vehicles imported fell to just 319 units, a drop of 97.4% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, imports of 2.5L to 3.0L cars surged by 108.8%, while those exceeding 3.0L increased by 48.7%.
The drop in four-wheel drive SUV imports, however, has been particularly notable. With rising global oil prices and an increasing number of locally produced alternatives, the demand for these vehicles has declined. From January to May, 13,197 such vehicles were imported, a 35% decrease from the previous year, with a value of $441 million, down 16.2%.
Among off-road vehicles, the most significant decline was seen in models below 2.5 liters, with both volume and value dropping by approximately 80%. In contrast, imports of larger displacement vehicles saw a slight increase.
Industry experts suggest that as more domestic car models become available and prices continue to fall, mid- and low-end imported vehicles are losing their competitive edge in the Chinese market. Looking ahead, the trend is expected to shift toward higher-priced luxury and personalized vehicles, with the average unit price of imported cars likely to rise further.
