Maleic anhydride esterification process "pave the way" downstream development
The maleic anhydride esterification technology developed by Sinopec's Fushun Research Institute of Petroleum and Chemicals has recently successfully passed a technical evaluation organized by China Petrochemical Corporation. This innovative process demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving a 100% conversion rate of maleic anhydride, a monomethyl maleate conversion rate of over 99.6%, and a dimethyl maleate selectivity of at least 98.2%. These high yields ensure the process meets the stringent requirements for the subsequent hydrogenation stage, making it a reliable and efficient solution for industrial applications.
Developed using its proprietary DZH-type resin catalyst, which was both researched and commercialized by the institute, this esterification process represents a significant technological breakthrough. The researchers employed a specialized catalytic distillation module, overcoming the limitations of existing foreign technologies. This advancement not only enhances separation efficiency but also significantly reduces operational costs, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective approach to production.
By utilizing maleic anhydride and methanol as raw materials, along with the DZH-type resin catalyst, the Fushun Research Institute has established a robust esterification process. Compared to traditional fixed-bed processes, the catalytic distillation method used in the diesterification unit offers advantages such as lower equipment investment, reduced operating costs, and decreased energy consumption. These benefits make the technology particularly attractive for large-scale industrial implementation.
In 2002, the Fushun Research Institute completed the design of a 12,000-ton-per-year 1,4-butanediol (esterification unit) process package, marking a key milestone in the application of this advanced technology. With its proven performance and economic viability, this process is expected to play a crucial role in the future development of chemical production in China and beyond.
