China's first plastic recycling production line was built in Beijing
In a remarkable leap toward sustainability, a transparent plastic bottle that appears as clear as glass and shows no signs of impurities under a magnifying glass is now being produced from recycled materials. Who would have thought such high-quality bottles could come from used plastic bottles? Recently, Beijing launched a pilot project for a circular economy, featuring a state-of-the-art plastic bottle recycling line. This innovative system transforms discarded plastic bottles into premium recycled plastic blocks, which are then reused in food and beverage packaging. International beverage giant Coca-Cola has already committed to purchasing 10,000 tons of this recycled material annually for its product packaging.
The production line was developed and built by Beijing Yingchuang Renewable Resources Co., Ltd. It stands as not only China’s first reclaimed bottle production line but also the largest in Asia. Inside the workshop, waste plastic bottles are automatically sorted by color before entering a sealed chamber. Through advanced physical and chemical cleaning processes, including UV sterilization, the bottles are either crushed into clear pieces or melted at high temperatures to form soft, smooth white plastic blocks. These can be used to manufacture high-quality recycled plastic bottles, creating a closed-loop cycle: "plastic bottles - used waste bottles - recycled plastic blocks - new plastic bottles."
According to reports, most plastic bottles are made from petroleum, with six tons of oil required to produce one ton of plastic. In Beijing alone, around 150,000 tons of plastic bottles are discarded each year. Traditionally, small-scale recyclers only perform basic processing, leading to resource waste and environmental pollution. However, Yingchuang's advanced recycling line can process 60,000 tons of used bottles annually—40% of the city’s total waste. The company has established the only modern recycling, pre-processing, and packaging center in the Yaojiayuan market in Chaoyang District. Every day, nearly 50 tons of used bottles arrive at the facility, with an average of 160 tons being processed daily across the city.
Zhao Yan, head of Yingchuang Renewable Resources Co., Ltd., stated that the company’s technology and equipment have been certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the International Life Sciences Society. Their recycled plastic meets the same safety standards as virgin plastic and can fully replace original bottles for food and pharmaceutical packaging. Moreover, the cost of producing recycled bottles is about 7% lower than that of new ones, making it both economically and environmentally beneficial. With growing demand, the company’s recycled bottles are currently in short supply. In addition to Coca-Cola, another major player, Danone, is also planning to place large orders. This project is setting a new benchmark for sustainable manufacturing and proving that recycling can be both efficient and profitable.
