China's first plastic recycling production line was built in Beijing
In a world where sustainability is becoming increasingly vital, a transparent plastic bottle that looks like glass and shows no signs of impurities even under a magnifying glass might seem like a miracle. But this is not a new product—it's the result of an innovative recycling process using recycled plastic bottles. Recently, Beijing launched a pilot project for a circular economy, featuring a state-of-the-art plastic bottle recycling line. This facility transforms used plastic bottles into high-quality recycled plastic blocks, which are then reused in food and beverage packaging. International beverage giant Coca-Cola has already committed to purchasing 10,000 tons of this recycled material annually for its own packaging.
The production line was developed by Beijing Yingchuang Renewable Resources Co., Ltd., marking not only the first reclaimed bottle production line in China but also the largest such facility in Asia. Inside the workshop, waste plastic bottles are automatically sorted by color, then cleaned and sterilized using advanced physical and chemical methods. Some are crushed into crystal-like pieces, while others are melted at high temperatures to create smooth, white plastic blocks. These can be used to produce high-quality recycled bottles, completing the cycle from "plastic bottle - used waste - recycled block - new plastic bottle."
Plastic bottles are primarily made from petroleum, with about six tons of oil needed to produce just one ton of plastic. In Beijing alone, approximately 150,000 tons of plastic bottles are discarded each year. Traditionally, these were collected by small-scale hawkers and often processed roughly, leading to resource waste and environmental pollution. Yingchuang’s advanced recycling line, however, can handle 60,000 tons of used bottles annually—40% of the city's total waste. The company now operates the only modern recycling, pre-processing, and packaging center for plastic bottles in the Yaojiayuan market in Chaoyang District. Every day, nearly 50 tons of used bottles arrive at the facility, with an average of 160 tons being recycled daily across the city.
According to Zhao Yan, the company’s CEO, Yingchuang’s technology and equipment have been certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the International Life Sciences Society. Their recycled plastic meets the same safety standards as virgin materials, making it suitable for food and pharmaceutical packaging. Moreover, their recycled bottles cost about 7% less than traditional ones, offering both economic and environmental benefits. With growing demand, the company’s products are in short supply. In addition to Coca-Cola, another global food leader, Danone, is also planning to place large orders. This project is not just a technological breakthrough—it’s a step toward a more sustainable future.
