Working fire in Northbrook, 5-6-20
This afternoon (May 6th, 2020), Northbrook firefighters were dispatched to 4040 Timberlane Drive, located in an unincorporated area of Cook County near the boundaries of Glenview, Wheeling, and Prospect Heights. Initial reports indicated smoke coming from the residence, and upon arrival, an officer from the Cook County Sheriff's Department reported visible flames erupting from the roof. The address is situated in the southwesternmost part of Northbrook’s jurisdiction, close to several neighboring towns. The nearest hydrant for this particular street, which spans several blocks, is located at the entrance off Sanders Road, prompting a response from Prospect Heights Fire Protection District's Tanker 9.
As I write this, I’m watching a video taken from the scene showing the intensity of the situation. Flames are clearly visible, and the smoke is thick enough to obscure much of the structure. It’s clear that this was no small fire.
Northbrook Engine 10 was the first to arrive on the scene and immediately began laying out a 5-inch hose from the hydrant towards the house. Upon arrival, crews encountered an advanced attic fire with significant smoke throughout the building. The alarm was quickly escalated to a working fire status, bringing additional resources from nearby Glenview and Wheeling, along with all available units from Northbrook and Prospect Heights’ Tanker 9.
The firefighting efforts were initially reliant on tanker water due to the lack of immediate access to a reliable water supply. It seemed that multiple lines were required to effectively combat the blaze. Northbrook Tower 12 was deployed to ventilate the roof using their elevated platform, a critical step in managing the fire’s spread and ensuring the safety of the firefighters inside.
Thankfully, no one was home at the time of the fire, avoiding any potential tragedy. As the situation unfolded, it became evident that the fire was aggressive and required coordinated efforts from various departments to bring it under control. Firefighters entered the structure with hose lines, aggressively attacking the flames from within while also managing external threats.
Looking through the images captured by Larry Shapiro, you can see the intensity of the situation. One photo shows a firefighter wearing a medical mask at the scene, indicating the precautions being taken even during such high-stress situations. Another captures heavy smoke billowing from the house, emphasizing the scale of the fire. Other images show firefighters advancing into the building with hose lines, demonstrating their determination to extinguish the flames as quickly as possible.
The fire was eventually brought under control after a significant effort involving multiple agencies and resources. It’s always sobering to witness the dedication and skill of firefighters in action, especially when faced with challenging conditions like those presented here.
As I continue to watch the events unfold, I am reminded of the importance of preparedness and community support in moments like these. It’s heartening to see how different departments come together to protect lives and property, even in the face of adversity.
