Buffalo Grove house fire 2-3-11
At dusk on Thursday, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department received a call about smoke coming from a residence at 21 Chestnut Terrace. When first responders arrived, heavy smoke had already engulfed the front of the house, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a Code 4 for an active working house fire. Firefighters discovered flames in a second-floor bedroom that had spread into the attic, and they quickly made a direct attack to contain the blaze. However, access to the rear of the home was severely hindered by deep snow drifts, some reaching up to five feet, making it nearly impossible to reach the back of the structure. Fortunately, no one was injured, and family members had reported the fire before it escalated.
Buffalo Grove firefighters were assisted by teams from Arlington Heights, Countryside, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Deerfield. Earlier that day, Buffalo Grove crews had been actively clearing fire hydrants throughout the village, which likely helped with water supply during the incident.

A series of photos captured by Larry Shapiro show the efforts of the responding units. One image shows Quint 27 extending its main line to gain access to the roof, while another highlights Truck 25’s team working to ventilate the attic. Squad 26 (246) provided essential scene lighting and an air bottle fill station, ensuring that firefighters had the necessary resources.
Another photo shows the quint securing a water supply by connecting to a hydrant in a nearby cul-de-sac, while another image reveals a hydrant that had been dug out from under the snow. A final shot captures a hydrant further down the street that had been cleared earlier in the day by responding units.
