Working fire in Northbrook, 5-6-20

This afternoon (May 6th, 2020), Northbrook firefighters responded to reports of smoke coming from a house located at 4040 Timberlane Drive. This area is part of unincorporated Cook County, near the borders of Glenview, Wheeling, and Prospect Heights. The nearest hydrant for this several-block-long street is situated at the entrance off Sanders Road, which prompted Prospect Heights Fire Protection District Tanker 9 to respond. When the initial call came in, an officer from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department arrived first and reported visible flames on the roof. This address is in the far southwestern corner of Northbrook's district, close to where the borders of several municipalities meet. As it became clear that additional resources would be needed, Northbrook Engine 10 was dispatched first and began laying 5-inch hoses from the hydrant towards the house. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an advanced attic fire with heavy smoke throughout the structure. The alarm was quickly escalated to a working fire, prompting reinforcements from neighboring departments including Glenview and Wheeling, along with all available units from Northbrook and Prospect Heights Tanker 9. The fire initially required the use of tanker water until a stable water supply could be established. It seemed that three separate lines were employed to fully extinguish the flames. Northbrook Tower 12 also contributed by ventilating the roof using their elevated platform. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire, avoiding any potential danger to residents. As the situation unfolded, images taken by Larry Shapiro provided a glimpse into the intense firefighting efforts. Heavy smoke billowed from the house as firefighters worked diligently to bring the blaze under control. Inside, crews advanced hose lines into the structure to ensure the fire was thoroughly doused. Additional photos showed the extent of the smoke and the coordinated efforts of multiple fire departments. The teamwork between Northbrook and surrounding districts was crucial in managing the incident effectively. Once the immediate threat was contained, crews continued to monitor the site to prevent re-ignition. The photos captured moments of intense action, highlighting the dedication and skill of the firefighters involved. Their ability to work quickly and efficiently under challenging conditions is a testament to their training and experience. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and preparedness within our communities.
