Top 4 Silver Screen Toyotas

There’s something magical about iconic movie lines that seem to echo through pop culture forever. They’re like little soundbites that get passed around, growing in legend with each retelling. Think about it—how many times have you mimicked Arnold Schwarzenegger saying “I’ll be back” in his unmistakable voice? Those moments stay with us, becoming part of our collective memory.

But beyond the quotes, there are also the famous movie cars. Sure, they might not be quoted as often, but to car enthusiasts, these vehicles hold just as much significance. They’ve become symbols in their own right, representing not just the movies they starred in but also the cultures they helped shape. Today, let’s dive into our top four favorite Toyotas from the big screen.

1. Pizza Planet Truck, Pixar Films

One of the most recognizable Easter eggs in Pixar’s films is the Pizza Planet Truck, which has made appearances in nearly every Pixar movie (with the exception of *The Incredibles*). Its design, particularly the "YO" on the tailgate and other styling details, looks suspiciously similar to a Toyota Hilux. Of course, this is just an assumption based on the resemblance, as the actual vehicle isn’t confirmed to be a Toyota. We first met the Pizza Planet Truck in *Toy Story*, where Woody and Buzz Lightyear hitch a ride on it to catch up with Andy at Pizza Planet. Later, it shows up in *A Bug's Life*, parked outside a trailer home. The truck even manages to make appearances in far-flung places like *Finding Nemo* (Australia), *Ratatouille* (Paris), and *Wall-E* (a post-apocalyptic Earth). Fans love spotting the Pizza Planet Truck, and some even theorize that all Pixar movies exist in the same interconnected universe. However, there’s a twist to this story. According to official Pixar lore, the Pizza Planet Truck isn’t a Toyota at all—it’s a fictional 1978 Gyoza Mark VII Lite Hauler. This detail might have been chosen because *Toy Story* had a modest budget and couldn’t afford the licensing rights for a real Toyota. Yet, despite its fictional origins, the resemblance remains strong enough that it still feels like a Toyota to many viewers. So, we’re including it here anyway—it’s too fun to leave out.

2. Toyota SR5 Xtra Cab Pickup, *Back to the Future*

While everyone remembers the sleek, futuristic DeLorean in *Back to the Future*, we’re here to argue that the coolest vehicle in the trilogy wasn’t the one with a Flux Capacitor. That honor belongs to the Toyota SR5 Xtra Cab Pickup. When Marty McFly exclaims, “Check out that 4x4! That is hot!” we couldn’t agree more. This particular SR5 wasn’t just a random prop—it was customized with upgrades like Toyota Racing Development wheels, tubular bumpers, a light bar, and KC HiLites, giving it an unmistakable edge. It quickly became the truck that everyone wanted to drive. The first SR5 used in the series was given away in a contest and tragically totaled by the new owner. But the second SR5, which appeared in *Back to the Future Part II* and *III*, had its own incredible journey. After its Hollywood debut, it became someone’s daily driver. The new owner painted it fluorescent orange with a blue interior, adding a personal touch. Years later, it was stolen from its Southern California home and ended up in Mexico, where it was used by a drug cartel. Eventually, the truck was recovered, restored to its original *Back to the Future* glory, and now sits as a prized piece of automotive history. Although it doesn’t have time-travel capabilities anymore, it remains a beloved symbol of nostalgia for fans.

3. Toyota Supra Mk IV, *The Fast and the Furious* Franchise

The *Fast and the Furious* franchise has grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide, making it one of the most successful movie series of all time. And at the heart of it all is Brian O’Conner’s Toyota Supra Mk IV, which has appeared in four of the seven films in the series. Despite what the characters say in the movie—that they spent between $10,000 and $15,000 on the car—the reality is that the production team invested over $150,000 in modifying the Supra to make it race-ready. One of the 58 versions of the Mk IV Supras used in the films recently sold at auction for $185,000. Considering its specs, that price tag might seem reasonable: a 2JZ engine, nitrous oxide system, custom roll cage, heavy-duty suspension, competition seats, strengthened fuel tank, wild body kit, massive rear wing, alloy wheels, Yokohama tires, and a performance steering wheel. It’s no wonder why the Supra has become such a cult classic among car enthusiasts.

4. Toyota 2000GT, *You Only Live Twice*

Let’s not forget about James Bond. Any list of iconic movie cars wouldn’t be complete without a nod to 007. In *You Only Live Twice* (1967), Sean Connery’s Bond trades in his trusty Aston Martin DB5 for a stunning 1966 Toyota 2000GT Sport Coupe Convertible—one of only two ever built. These limited-edition models were never released to the public, making them incredibly rare and highly sought after today. Some similar models have sold for over a million dollars at auction, and it’s safe to say that the actual car used in the film would likely fetch an astronomical price if it ever came up for sale. While one of the 2000GTs is believed to have been scrapped, the other was restored and placed on display at the Toyota Automotive Museum in Aichi, Japan.
