Chicago 4-11 Alarm Fire 12-29-12 (pt 1)
I just got back from checking out the massive 4-11 alarm fire that broke out today at 2441 W. 21st Street in Chicago. It was quite a spectacle! The fire started after 1 PM and quickly escalated to a 4-11 alarm with an EMS Plan I and a Haz Mat Level I response. The building, a three-story brick structure, was well involved when first responders arrived.
It was located near railroad tracks to the west and the elevated CTA tracks to the north, which had to be shut down for several hours. Firefighters faced intense conditions with high winds fanning the flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky. Some companies stayed on scene through the night.
I snapped some photos from different angles. From Laramie and Ogden in Cicero, you could see the massive smoke plume. As I got closer, the Chicago Police had set up a four-block perimeter around the fire building. Traffic was absolutely gridlocked, but I managed to get some decent shots of Engine 113 racing towards the scene.
The scale of the fire was incredible. One of the walls eventually collapsed onto 21st Street, adding to the chaos. There were multiple tower ladders and even two Snorkels working the scene. The firefighters did an amazing job under such challenging conditions.
Drew Gresik also sent over some great photos from Berwyn showing the massive smoke cloud visible from miles away. Another contributor, Dylan Konchan, captured some incredible images from Sector 3, including the reserve Snorkel moving into position to use its elevated master stream.
Steve Redick even shared a short video clip with accompanying radio traffic. It's clear this was a serious incident, with over a dozen master streams eventually deployed. The fire burned fiercely for hours before it was finally brought under control around 4 PM.
Sorry for the late update—I wanted to make sure I had all the details straight before posting. It was definitely an impressive fire to witness, and the crews did an outstanding job managing such a complex situation. I’ll keep adding more photos and updates as they come in.
