CFD Still & Box – 3/1/2014
**February 15, 2023 - 12021 South Eggleston Avenue Fire Incident Report**
This is Dennis McGuire, Jr., and I’m here to share my firsthand account of the fire that broke out earlier today at 12021 South Eggleston Avenue in Chicago. Engine Company 115 was the first to respond to the emergency call at approximately noon. When they arrived, they discovered a basement fire in a two-story brick apartment building. Battalion 22 quickly upgraded the situation to a Still & Box alarm when it became apparent that the fire had spread rapidly to the second floor.
One of the challenges we faced was related to hydrant access. It seemed like the hydrants in the area were frozen, which caused a significant delay in establishing a reliable water source. This added an extra layer of difficulty for the firefighters who were already working under intense pressure. Truck Company 27 positioned themselves in the quarter-sector position and deployed their mainline to the roof to control the fire. The firefighting efforts involved approximately four to five handlines, which were critical in containing the blaze.
Something else that caught my attention during this incident was the behavior of a nearby neighbor. While the firefighters were actively engaged inside the burning building, this individual decided they couldn’t wait any longer and attempted to leave the scene. Unfortunately, in their haste, they accidentally drove their vehicle over several fire hoses. Their actions were quickly halted when six or seven firefighters, along with a police officer, surrounded the car, effectively blocking their movement. As expected, the driver didn’t get far after that.
I managed to capture some photos throughout the event, providing a glimpse into the chaos and the bravery displayed by our firefighters. The images include shots of the smoke billowing from the sector 2 side, firefighters pulling additional lines into the building, and the overall scene from various angles. One particularly striking image shows a car inadvertently crossing over the fire hoses before being immobilized by the responding personnel.
Despite the challenges, the firefighters persevered, and the fire was eventually brought under control. These brave men and women truly embody the spirit of service and sacrifice. I want to express my gratitude to all those who worked tirelessly to protect the community and ensure everyone’s safety.
Stay safe, and thank you for your dedication!
