Will Drivers Want a RAV4 EV?

In the midst of all the buzz surrounding electric vehicles, certain models don't seem to get the recognition they deserve. While Tesla dominates the spotlight, Toyota quietly introduced an electric SUV reminiscent of the RAV4. Currently, this new electric SUV from Toyota is only available in Europe under the name X Prologue. Its design closely mirrors the RAV4, making it a stealthy contender in the growing market for electric SUVs. Interestingly, this isn't Toyota's first foray into electric vehicles. To many, it might come as a surprise that Toyota has already ventured into electric SUVs twice, though both times production was short-lived. Given the popularity of the RAV4 and the increasing demand for EVs, it’s curious why these efforts didn’t gain more traction. Let’s delve deeper into both generations. The first-generation RAV4 EV hit the market in 1997, initially offered as a fleet option for cities, businesses, or utility companies to lease. By 2002, Toyota began offering this electric SUV to the general public, but only managed to sell or lease 328 units before ceasing production. Despite a waiting list for the vehicle, the reasons behind Toyota's decision remain unclear. Fast forward to 2010, when Toyota partnered with Tesla through a joint development agreement. This collaboration led to the second-generation RAV4 EV, one of the first full-sized electric SUVs from Toyota in the U.S. market. At the time, Toyota sold one of its manufacturing plants to Tesla for a mere $42 million, later purchasing $50 million worth of Tesla stock after Tesla went public that same year. This move positioned Toyota to benefit significantly from Tesla's advanced battery and energy-efficient technologies, which were instrumental in creating the RAV4 EV's impressive range of approximately 200 miles per charge. The second-generation RAV4 EV launched in 2012 and ceased production in 2014. During its brief lifespan, it boasted several notable features: - An impressive range of 103 miles per charge. - Advanced IntelliTouch touch-sensor controls, navigation, satellite radio options, and Bluetooth connectivity for music streaming. - A lithium-metal-oxide battery pack and charging system developed by Tesla. - Powertrain components supplied by Tesla, including an electric motor capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds. What set the RAV4 EV apart was its collaboration with Tesla Motors, offering more space and a competitive price point for an electric SUV at the time. Priced at $49,800, it was considered reasonably affordable for an electric SUV. Despite its impressive specs, the RAV4 EV faced challenges. Sales figures were modest, with only 192 units sold in 2012, 1,096 in 2013, and 1,201 in 2014, totaling just 2,489 units sold overall. Its limited availability in California likely impacted its appeal. One significant drawback was the lengthy charging time—without a Level 2 charger, it could take up to 24 hours for a full charge, which wasn't practical for everyday use. This factor, combined with limited availability and perhaps the early market's hesitation towards electric SUVs, contributed to its discontinuation after the 2014 model year. Some speculate that Toyota's decision to end its partnership with Tesla in 2014 also played a role, possibly signaling Toyota's desire to establish itself independently in the EV space. Interestingly, Toyota reintroduced an electrified RAV4 in 2020 with the RAV4 Prime, a plug-in hybrid producing 302 horsepower. Unlike the X Prologue, the RAV4 Prime is available in the U.S. As Toyota continues to explore the EV landscape, it remains to be seen whether the X Prologue will mark a significant shift in their approach to electric vehicles. Only time will tell if this quiet entry into the electric SUV segment will gather the attention it deserves.
