The Courier-News recently covered a heartwarming charity boxing event that's making a real difference in the community: As the Third Annual Tuition Knock Out approaches, the Aurora chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA) is once again bringing together local law enforcement and community members for a night of action, pride, and generosity. This year’s event has moved to a larger venue at East Aurora High School, reflecting its growing popularity and commitment to supporting education. The main goal of the event is to raise scholarship funds for a deserving local student. The prize? A full two-year scholarship to either Waubonsee Community College or Elgin Community College — covering all tuition costs. That means the recipient can earn an associate’s degree without any out-of-pocket expenses. This year’s fight card features 15 amateur bouts from Jesse “The Law†Torres Boxing Club, followed by eight exhibition matches featuring police officers, firefighters, and other first responders from Aurora, Elgin, and surrounding areas. It’s not just about the sport — it’s about showing off the dedication and spirit of those who serve our communities every day. Aurora Police Sgt. Alfredo Dean, the president of the NLPOA chapter, explained that the organization shifted from giving smaller scholarships to offering a full ride to better support students. "We want the winner to be able to focus on their education without worrying about money," he said. Last year’s event helped fund Cristina Martinez’s full tuition at ECC, and since 2012, the Tuition Knock Out has raised over $15,000 in scholarships. In 2023, the event brought in $20,000, with fans and first responders filling up LaSierra De Aurora. This year’s main event promises to be one of the most exciting yet: Aurora Police Investigator Erik Swastek will face off against Aurora Fire Lt. Jeremy Allway in a match that could determine the bragging rights of the city’s toughest fighters. Also returning is Aurora Alderman Richard Irvin, who previously lost a close decision but remains determined to come back stronger. The event will take place this Sunday at East Aurora High School. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., with amateur fights starting at 2 p.m. Exhibition matches are set for 5 p.m. The fight card includes some of the area’s most dedicated public servants, including Dave Sharp (Woodstock Police), Eric Echevaria (Elgin Police), Greg Christoffel (Aurora Police), Lorena Hernandez (Aurora Police), Miriam Uribe (Elgin Police), and many more. Tickets are available for $15 for adults and $5 for children aged 6–12. VIP seating is also available for $50. You can purchase tickets online at https://ticketriver.com/event/13048.
