Charity Police vs Fire boxing match

The Courier-News recently covered a heartwarming charity boxing event that's making a real difference in the community:

Now entering its third year, the Tuition Knock Out charity boxing event organized by the Aurora chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA) has moved to a bigger venue as it continues to raise funds for local students. This year’s event is set to take place at East Aurora High School and promises an exciting mix of amateur fights and professional-style exhibitions.

The scholarship offered through this event is nothing short of impressive—recipients can earn a full two years of tuition at either Waubonsee Community College or Elgin Community College, giving them the chance to pursue an associate’s degree without any out-of-pocket costs. For many students, this could be the key to unlocking their future.

The event kicks off with 15 amateur matches from Jesse “The Law” Torres Boxing Club, followed by eight exhibition bouts featuring police officers, firefighters, and other first responders from Aurora, Elgin, and surrounding areas. These matches aren’t just about competition—they’re about pride, community, and support for local youth.

Aurora Police Sgt. Alfredo Dean, who also serves as the NLPOA chapter president, explained that the organization made the switch from smaller scholarships to a full-ride opportunity in order to give students the best possible chance to succeed. "We want the student to not have to spend a penny," he said. Last year’s event helped Cristina Martinez receive a full scholarship to Elgin Community College, and since 2012, the Tuition Knock Out has raised over $15,000 in total.

This year’s main event features a highly anticipated showdown between Aurora Police Investigator Erik Swastek and Aurora Fire Lt. Jeremy Allway. The match is expected to draw a lot of attention, not just for the action, but for the bragging rights that come with it. Another familiar face is Aurora Alderman Richard Irvin, who previously competed in the event and lost by decision last year.

The event will take place on Sunday at East Aurora High School. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., with the first amateur fights starting at 2 p.m. Exhibition matches are scheduled for 5 p.m. Attendees can look forward to a full lineup of fighters, including several local law enforcement officers and community leaders.

Some of the exhibition matches include: Dave Sharp (Woodstock Police) vs. Eric Waitrovich (Fox River Grove Police), Eric Echevaria (Elgin Police) vs. Dan Henry (Woodstock Police), Greg Christoffel (Aurora Police) vs. Raul Rodriguez (Melrose Park Police), Lorena Hernandez (Aurora Police) vs. Heather Robinson (Elgin Police), Miriam Uribe (Elgin Police) vs. Tricia Malone (Cary Police), Richard Irvin (Aurora Alderman) vs. Juan Reyna (Aurora Township Trustee), Al Young (Elgin Police) vs. Steve Brandt (Bartlett Fire), and the main event: Erik Swastek (Aurora Police) vs. Jeremy Allway (Aurora Fire).

Tickets are available for $15 for adults and $5 for children aged 6–12. VIP seating is also available for $50. You can purchase tickets online at https://ticketriver.com/event/13048. To learn more about the NLPOA scholarship program, visit http://www.nlpoa.com/?Aurora.
